A commenter on EDSBS points out that in 2001, Texas* was in the exact situation which UT seems to think it SHOULD have been in this time, namely: playing in the title game, having beaten top rivals in both divisions. That year it was OU and Colorado, who UT* had beaten earlier.
Texas* lost to CU in the title game, still another 'why they play the game' lesson, which you can record just below "to name champions."
